Torrox is a sizeable, and quite attractive, village situated west of Nerja, and some 4 km inland from its coastal offshoot of Torrox Costa. We list walks from both of these townships.
The centre in particular is very pretty with brilliant white-walled houses clinging to the steep slope on which the town is built.
Historically, Torrox reached the height of its prosperity during the Moorish period due to its pivotal role in the silk trade between Granada and Near Eastern cities such as Baghdad and Damascus.
Torrox isn't really reachable from Nerja on foot, due both to distance and terrain, but it is very easy to park here, and then take one of the various walks listed below.
Some routes are out and back, but others will require the use of two cars or a bus journey.
Torrox - Torrox Costa and Return (12 km Self guided)
The classic walk from Torrox, although not exactly venturing out into the surrounding raw countryside, is that from here down to Torrox Costa, and then back again, but by a very different route. Whilst down on the coast you have the opportunity to visit any of a large number of cafes and restaurants, and to observe its celebrated Faro, or lighthouse. A diversion on the return route leads to an ancient Roman bridge.
Torrox - Frigiliana (14.5 km Self guided)
As described here this is a decent walk from the village of Torrox to that of Frigiliana, restricting itself to the main road in between the two. In this way it is extremely easy to follow, but is almost as pleasant a route underfoot as would be a cross-country trek, since the road is little used, and not exactly a well-tarmacked highway. The views along the route are quite spectacular, especially as you begin to drop down the valley into Frigiliana.
